When I called Firefox for support I got an office in India named vgeek support who said my computer in great danger and sold me a $400 protection package, real?

Posted

I called in for help because Firefox would not display my websites correctly. I called the telephone number on the Firefox website and got Vgeek support. They remotely scanned my computer and said my computer was at risk - claiming I had a trojan that my antivirus did not find and that my computer was about to crash because internal system elements were closing down. They talked me into a $400 three year protection and support package - which some local computer repair personnel say may have not been necessary. The vgeek support say they work for Firefox. Is that correct or have I been scammed??? Please advise.

Nor, a more detailed reply. I wanted to get the message to you first that you had been scammed, and you IMMEDIATELY put a stop on your card and change all numbers as this is the most critically important thing to do. I'll give you some more information that you will want to follow after you do that t stay safe.

These are well know scams, where companies will tell you have a virus (which you don't, they will lie to get you to believe them) and them scam your credit and debit card numbers. As I said, this website is the only official Mozilla support site, and you won't find any phone numbers here, nor will we ask for any money (unless you choose to donate).

Follow Cor-els advice above to scan for malware, and uninstall any programs this phone number had you install. Also change any passwords (your back password, amazon, etc.) to be safe.

You have been scammed. I'm not sure what website you went to, but support.mozilla.org is the only Mozilla support site there is, and we don't provide telephone support. IMMEDIATELY call your financiers and stop the transaction and change your credit card number. Then remove any software that number had you install.

Firefox doesn't offer support by phone, so if you clicked a link then what you got isn't official Firefox support.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

I had the same thing happen recently. They are not refunding my money back. And now I have misplaced the number to contact them on. Hopefully my credit card company will accept the dispute, but in case they don't accept it I want to have a contact number for the scammers. Do you have their number. The lady in the billing department's name is Angel. I appreciate as much help as possible. Thanks!

No, these are criminal scammers, so we don't have their information ether unfortunately. Your credit card company should stop payment on the transaction.

I called these people vGEEK Support 1-855-772-9555 and according to my VISA Statement it was on January 11, 2013, the charge was $399.99 and it was to be for 4 years of technical support. Actually they did provide technical support a few times in January, February and... perhaps March. However, when I called them today the operator said, "The number you have dialed has been cancelled." I was trying to find them on the internet and came in here because I thought they had some connection with Firefox.

You have all been scammed by the simplest Scam on the Internet. I didn't think people would still fall for this in 2013 ! How can you not be aware of this ? I would understand if this was 1999 while Internet was still somehow unknown to the masses but come on ! Do you guys really click on every link that says you won an Ipad ? Do you give them your CC number too ? Your only hope is to dispute the transaction with your bank and to finally realize that the Internet is a bad bad place sometimes ! IF you're not sure about something, google it before you pay !

Contact your Bank, inform them of the scam, and perhaps pursue this matter with your local police department as well. There are no legitimate companies that sell support for Firefox. This site provides free support and is the only safe and legitimate support site for Firefox.

Yes you have been scammed. Unfortunately i am a employee of that company...i was on a tech post in that company...this company has been shut down...and this is true that they got customers to believe that their computers have been infected and charged from them a lot of money. Do not believe these kind of technical support again....in fact the charge of fixes these kind of problems is very cheap if you ask me. Not even more than $30. Please do not keep any grudge against me but i have also not been paid any salary of around 2 months. Sorry people but this cant be helped. But for future only go for supports which are free or whose charges are very low.

Firefox support should be done on this site, there is no other website that can officially provide Mozilla Firefox support. Never use another websites for Firefox support.
