For some reason, FF 15 will arbitrarily "protect" a tab and I am unable to "unprotect" it and, therefore, am unable to close it. Any suggestions?

Are you meaning App Tabs? Pinned Tabs - keep favorite websites open and just a click away

If you right click the tab, do you see "Unpin Tab"?

Are you using a tab related extension that allows to protect a tab?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
