I recently spoke personally with several people last week all of who are Firefox users but only few of them have Avast and of those few people there all experiencing the same problems that I have.

I still consider testing makes more sense than asking questions, and I suspect you may have issues with your rather unusual set-up./questions/931482#answer-349697

I have also asked a question on the Avast forum http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=101305.0 it may be interesting to see if we get any responses there.

My opinion is that Avast alone is unlikely to cause major lagging in Firefox.

The post with poll I made in the avast forum did get some replies. The majority seemed to say that Firefox and Avast should not cause problems.

Some of the respondents obviously know that forum well, and pointed out many forum users do use Firefox, and such respondents would probably have seen and pointed out any major threads (should they exist) concluding Firefox was lagging when Avast was used.

I and others have already suggested you use SafeMode, and I would also say as a troubleshooting steps try a clean profile, and do not use all that software at the same time.

I would leave this thread for anyone wishing to comment on Avast, but suggest maybe you consider the advice you have been offered already in other threads that you started.

More generally any user may use /questions?filter=my-contributions to find your own posts.

For information on related subjects also see this listing of links to HELP ARTICLES from the Firefox Knowledge Base:

P.S.
on the Avast forum thread I also listed some useful links about FlashPlayers Flash 11.3 issues including comment on the new protected mode feature, and RealPlayer problems.

'''I believe a comment to John 99's question in the Avast forum may answer the question of lagging.

I believe I was using Avast when I tried out Firefox. The program seemed to work but not well. It was impossible to use unless I allowed all 1st Party Cookies on my machine. That meant accumulating all sorts of unwanted session cookies, tracking cookies, adware cookies etc. if I wanted to use Firefox.

I posted this on Firefox forum and requested help for how to use Firefox without accepting every single cookie anybody wanted to drop on my machine. I got no replies or assistance or suggestions after a week of asking so I was forced to uninstall. Obviously I don't want all those cookies for security reasons. This website we're on here demands 1st Party Cookies be allowed in order to post, which forces a security compromise if I forget to disallow after posting here.

If Firefox worked without demanding 1st Party Cookies be allowed from all websites I would have used it because otherwise I use IE6, far less than good! Not sure how Avast effected it, never got much of a chance to find out if that was part of the problem.

I answered here because it's possible people on your forum aren't aware that Firefox will glitch and stumble without 1st Party Cookies enabled and are blaming it on Avast."

I also have 1st party cookies "Bettercookies privacy" as an add-on so will disable this to see if there is an improvement as it has been driving me nuts!

I use version firefox 14.0.1 and free Avast software - I disabled the script shield on Avast at one point as I kept getting script errors on Firefox and thought that may be contributing to it. But have switched it back on again as there was no change.

Hi Eve006.75, let's talk about cookies.

Cookies help a site recognize you between page requests. If you are using a site for a series of related actions, you probably want a cookie that lasts for at least the time you are using the site. After that, you probably prefer to delete the cookie in most cases so that the next time you visit the site it doesn't correlate your new activity with your old activity.

How can you get just the cookies you want and not those that you don't? Or, if minute-by-minute cookie management is too much of a headache, how do you deal with it?

I think the easiest approach is to set Firefox to expire all cookies at the end of the session. In other words, to keep them until you close Firefox. (Note that if you resume a previous session, the cleared cookies come back as part of the session.) Make exceptions for sites you want to remember you longer (Allow) and those you never want to set cookies (Block). If you need to research or do something that you want completely separated from your regular cookies, use Private Browsing.

Add-ons can help with other methods of cookie management.

Jsubs comment in the Avast forum may also be relevant but I am yet to test it - that box was blank for my firefox.

"3. Check in avast file shield settings in the exclude settings if *\firefox\profiles\*sessionstore*.js exists and only the write box is checked"

Have to say I am one of those people who dont clear cookies on a regular basis and once had a corrupt yahoo cookie which messed up things terribly until I removed it - yes, really.

Having adjusted the file shield settings as advised above in Avast re Firefox and also disabled the BetterPrivacy Super Cookie super cookie safeguard, and WoT, my Firefox runs much faster and so far with lots of tabs open with no hangs or error script messages.

I have version 14.0.1 of Mozilla Firefox and 7.0.1456 free version of Avast.

This may not work for every version but it works for this version and for me, I am happy.

I also found info that you should check that your firefox plug-ins are up-to-date and I disabled all those which didnt have an update in the last year - Firefox runs faster as a result

Well its been almost 24 days since Firefox last froze on me but just today it froze again I think I'm going to disable all of my outdated extension Such as SmoothWheel then I'll wait 15 days and see if it makes deference one other I thing I should mention that I updated Adobe Flash to version 11.4.402.265 last night and I think that this might have something to do with FF freezing up again.

An option may be to run either multiple versions or multiple profiles of Firefox, because you have obviously had many problems judging by previous posts, and seem reluctant to try safemode without plugins, or a new profile/reset.

Your multiple types of security software is also a likely problem.

Well I have Sandboxie and Avast and it turns out that the latest version of Avast is conflicting with Sandboxie: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=13488 as you can see there is a quick fix for this problem that I'm having and I'm almost positive that nothing is wrong with my Firefox.
