My autoupdates aren't installing, and manually installing updates is not working.

My update won't install. It says that it should always be checking for and installing updates, but I allegedly have v 3.5.18... and when I try to update it has been saying (for hours) that it can't do the update so it's updating the whole package or something. I really don't want to uninstall and re-install because I have tons of saved passwords and bookmarks. Help!
