I can use the two address bars at the very top of the screen but I cannot get anything to work when entering data into either of the two large bars in the centre of the screen. Yet one of these has 'search' title beside it.

I can see nothing in the help pages to assist me in understanding their purpose or use.

Are you talking about the searchContainer and the snippetContainer on the default Firefox 4 /5 homepage - about:home?

If so, try this to fix it.

1. You need to make sure that domStorage is enabled.
Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter.
If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.
Filter - dom.storage.enabled = the Value should be True
If not, double-click that pref to toggle it to true.

2. Then right-click this pref and select Reset after enabling dom storage
browser.startup.homepage_override.buildID

3. Then restart Firefox.

if dom storage is disabled when the profile is upgraded, about:home remains broken even after dom storage is re-enabled

about:home does not check for disabled dom storage (null localStorage)

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
