I learned how to THOROUGHLY describe backing up bookmarks to a CD using Firefox 4.0.1 and Windows 7. I would like to share it but don't know how to do this on this website. I wrote it all down step-by-step in an MS Word document.

All the details are written in my question. I trouble-shot my information by moving bookmarks to another PC. It worked - perfectly.

What web site would you like to post on? If you mean here, you can paste text here from Word, but some of the formatting will not carry over.

Are there images that go along with the text? How much time do you want to spend on this?

Thank you for getting back to me. I don't know what web-site to post on. I've never done this before so I would like to use the easiest one out there I guess. I don't have pictures, just an MS Word file with all the information on it.

(continued from previous reply) Can you e-mail me about this? Do you have my e-mail? or do I need to give it to you. I really don't want to put it out for the public however. robin

I think you have a number of choices.

This site has a Knowledge Base and you can write an article here. See Improve the Knowledge Base | How to contribute | Firefox Help. It is subject to editing, so if you don't want anyone touching your work, this is not the right choice. Also, you need to use some different formatting commands.

There are lot of discussion forums, in addition to this one. You could post on one of those. You also could attach a PDF if the format just doesn't carry over very well.

The web has numerous "how to" sites such as eHow. I'm not sure about their process for posting.

You also could post on your own site. You might have a free home page with your internet service provider. Or you could sign up for a blogging account. But fewer people may end up finding those sites than an already popular one.

It is usually easier to backup bookmarks and other profile data to an USB stick. You may consider adding that as well.

Readers of this thread may also be interested in the article what is firefox sync.

Firefox Sync does synchronise bookmarks between different devices, and allows your bookmarks to be backed up over the internet. This method does have some limitations, no doubt it will be enhanced over time.

If Sync is used a user may well be wise to still retain some independent backups of bookmarks. (See cor-el's links in the message above)

Yes I know. I tried to cut and paste it but when I went to check the formatting (I copied and pasted it back into an MS Word document) it didn't translate to anything remotely legible because all the formatting was gone.

Where were you pasting?

Microsoft Word has a built-in HTML generator. Maybe that will help? Under Save As, try using "filtered HTML" as a format. Some aspects of this method are imperfect, for example, the layout may not accommodate different browser widths well, and the formatting may be a little stodgy, but it could be a good starting point for editing.

I'm thoroughly intrigued by all this and would like to possibly share other Firefox solutions I come across. I have time to work out all the kinks. I would mostly like to work out these solutions on MS Word and (somehow) import my Word documents into reply boxes. If I can figure out how to keep the formatting so others can copy and paste my solutions back into their word processing programs I think that would work best for me. The other way (that intrigues me also) is to (somehow) turn my MS Word files into http// format that would interface better with these reply boxes. I'm going to read some more (go thru Firefox Help more) about how I might go about doing this kind of thing. Thank you for helping me. I can use all the input I can get. I'm not that computer savvy - yet.

OK I'll try this.

Easiest is to backup bookmarks to an HTML file if you want to do further processing and keep the formatting intact.

Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Export HTML

Some sites use "wiki" markup like this board, others use BBCode, and still others may have their own tricks and techniques.

For this site, the markup cheat sheet is here: https://support.mozilla.com/kb/markup-chart

As you know, Word has a very powerful macro system. You could create (or find and download) macros to format your Word document for different online forums. Depending on how you format your Word documents (e.g., if you use different styles vs. direct formatting from the toolbar), it may be more or less challenging to create.

I have posted a sample converter, but it only handles a limited set of formatting at the moment, but hopefully it will help: http://www.jeffersonscher.com/forumshots/Sample_Word-to-Wiki_macro.doc
