Youtube videos show up as black box with no controls?

Just recently I started having issues watching YouTube videos in 720p. At least it started there.

I go to watch a video that I had previously watched and it loads perfectly fine. Then I click the tab to go to 720p. Now the box where the video was is empty, the controls are missing, and the video bar is up and playing but nothing is showing. It is just blank.

Now it's worse! Some videos it's like that no matter what resolution I choose. Others only play in resolutions below 480p. Most videos now are only a black box, the play bar rolls on like the video is playing, and anytime I roll my mouse over it the time stamp gets stuck permanently on the window. The resolution bar does the same thing, it will get stuck in the window forever.

I've done a dozen of the trouble shooting tips recommended by Mozilla and, Adobe. Reinstalled Flash 10 times. I don't know what to do. It does the same thing in Google Chrome also. I have Adblock plus installed. I checked to make sure I hadn't blocked the video windows by accident that isn't the problem.

I'm on a newer Dell XPS laptop and have never had this problem. It has developed out of nowhere.

Any help is much appreciated.

You can try to disable the hardware acceleration in the Flash Player.

See Flash videos won't play full screen

Flash "Display settings" window:

I have this same problem too, it was fine just 30 minutes ago, then I noticed I didn't have playback controls, then minutes later it's just a black screen(but the audio is still playing).

The same can be said on Google Chrome.

I'm running a fairly new laptop, Windows 7 64bit edition. 2 days ago, Flash was also having some issues, always crashing whenever I try to load flash applications. Reinstalled it and it seemed fine, up until now.

Yea guys i have same problem been searching for a better answer than "deselecting hardware acceleration" which defeats the purpose of the latest Adobe upgrades. This is a You tube issue.. I JUST FOUND A POSTING from another site. The guy says that if you click on the tiny pop-out window icon, that the video pops out in a seperate window and plays normally,. I tried it and it worked for me!!

That pop-out icon is the one between the resolution number and that double pointing arrow[the expand button], in the bottom right of the screen.

So you can play the videos right on the main page ,just popout the video and it will play normally. Until they fix the problem, that should be satifactory and not much of an inconvenience.

It is possible that you have an extension that is blocking content.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

beermug, The problem is that I, and the OP cannot even see the controls, making us unable to click the pop up button. I would love to be able to watch YouTube videos again, but I can't even do your workaround.

This image may show you what we mean by "no controls" better.

I'm not using the beta version but 3.6.15 , but I am having this problem. I already reinstalled flash and rebooted a few times to now luck. I think it may be a problem with youtube's site.

http://www.youtube.com/swf_test.html plays the video fine with no problems, however if you click on the video to view it 'on youtube' I get the black box. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHZFsJKlsuA&feature=player_embedded

Just tried a possible solution over on youtube forums and it worked for me at least. Try changing the http to https in the address bar.
