Is the account POP or IMAP? If it's IMAP, is the Trash or Deleted folder subscribed? Right-click the account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe, Refresh, and see if the correct folder is checked.

The account is POP. The only setting I have that could be even remotely related is not to delete any items from server when deleted from Thunderbird. I deleted an email by mistake, wanted to reply, but can't find how to access it. I know they exist in the system as I am periodically asked if I want to remove them from the Deleted folder. Thanks again.

With a POP account, the Deleted or Trash folder should appear under the account in the Folder Pane. Is the Folder Pane hidden? View/Layout to show it.

Thank you; that worked! Just recently came back to Thunderbird after many years, and didn't realize that somehow the Folder Pane was hidden on installation. Much appreciated.
