Firefox backup became an Edge file when imported to new computer
I have a large number of carefully organized Firefox bookmarks, which I backed up each time I logged off for the day, saving the most recent five. I imported these from my standalone backup hard drive to my new computer. Firefox couldn't restore them. Then I saw that for all five files, the listed file type was "Microsoft Edge HTML Document," so no wonder.
I have no idea how or why this happened or what to do about it. In theory, import into Edge and then export into Firefox? Given this incident and some bad past experiences, that prospect scares me to death. Any other suggestions, please? I would be so grateful for a way out of this.

See "Microsoft Edge HTML Document" might only be caused by Edge being the default browser as that usually includes taking over the .html file extension among others.
What do you see if you open the HTML file in a Firefox tab ?
Note that you need to import an HTML backup and that merges those bookmarks with the current bookmarks.
You restore a JSON backup and that replaces all the current bookmarks.
