Hi,

I am loading Tb (78.6.0 32-bit) on two new win 10 Pro installations. Incoming mail works fine but sending mail it asks for the pword again after login and it continually fails. Then the attached err msg appears.

Also Attached are the instructions from my ISP, Sonic.net for connecting to Tb. Their tech dept. double checked my config and sending emails from their web mail program works as expected.

My current email connection (on Win 8.1 Pro) has been in place for over 5 years and still works fine on my main account but I found that the less frequently used email addresses have the same exact problem (Upgraded to 78.6.0) even though NONE of them have the currently recommended server settings and the ISP does not have a separate IMAP Pword. This makes the problem difficult to track down as I am not certain where to look for a problem. Otherwise I have been a happy user for ~10 years.

Thanks for any assistance,

alr3

BTW: Is there a 64 bit edition?

What is your anti-virus software?

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled.

Does the problem go away?

Is there a 64 bit edition?

There is. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/#E

Hi Christ1,

My antivirus software is Sophos (Great BTW) but I did not load their firewall, they recommend Windows for that.

From msconfig: I went to the Boot Tab and checked Safe Boot and there was not change.

Next, from the General Tab I checked Diagnostic StartUp (No network enabled option) and then Tb cannot connect to the server, no in mail either.

Settings changed back restored previous condition. This was my first use of Safe Mode in Win 10 so I'm not sure I tried the correct option but still can't connect to outgoing server.

Would the 64 bit version be any different? (thx I did find it)

Any other thoughts on what might be the problem or places to look would be much appreciated.

Thx again,

alr3

The article lists three possible options how to get into safe mode. Using msconfig is none of them. If the instructions for Windows safe mode linked above didn't help, I'd suggest you use Google to find better instructions. There are also good tutorials on Youtube.

Hi Christ1 and Others,

I found the find safe mode with networking, logged on and sent a test message. Same result:

Send Message Error: ...connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.sonic.net timed out.

Does this rule out antivirus and firewall problems. What remains that could be the problem?

Again, this has worked flawlessly on Win 8.1 for ~ a decade. I'm not sure where to look, any suggestions or references would be much appreciated.

Thanks again,

alr

Does this rule out antivirus and firewall problems.

Most likely yes. Firewall shouldn't be an issue in the first place, as it usually doesn't block outgoing connections. At least the Windows built-in firewall does not. I don't know what Sophos does. What you need Sophos for exactly is still beyond me, but that's up to you.

What remains that could be the problem?

Try SSL/TLS on port 465 for the outgoing. Their instructions suggest port 587 is used with no security, although here they seem to indicate port 587 with STARTTLS security is possible, if not recommended.

Thanks sfhowes for the suggestion I have set this up in many configurations and tried this one again with the same result.

Then I matched the settings up to my Win 8.1 machine exactly where I can still send emails and tried to send emails from the same email address with no change! I have ruled out the anti-virus and fire wall though they are the same on both machines. The only difference I am aware of is the OS. What's different about Win 10 in this regard?

The bottom line is that I can send emails as I have for years before getting a Win 10 machine where I have never been able to send even one email from any address. I bet this is something simple but I sure don't see it.

Any suggestions about where to look would be much appreciated.

Thanks to all,

alr
