complains it can't update to the latest version while on the latest version 68.4.2 (32 bit)

Running win10-64 10.0.17763 build 17763 using Windows Defender Anti-virus.

My Internet is optical fiber 1000 wired connection.

Every single day, in the morning, I get a warning that Thunderbird can't update to the latest version.

I go into tools->Options->Update and it starts checking and after a few seconds tells me that it is up to date.

I have it set to 'check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them'.

Not causing a problem, but ... not exactly the desired behavior.

Do you also have Kaspersky installed? It's well-known to cause spurious update notifications.

The C:\ProgramData\Mozilla\updates folder contains subfolders for each TB and Firefox version installed. View the updates.xml file in a text editor to see which one is for TB. Deleting the subfolder, with TB closed, sometimes stops incorrect notifications.

As I mentioned: " using Windows Defender Anti-virus." which doesn't co-exist with Kaspersky.

I'll give your updates.xml advice a try - Thanks!

The folder for Thunderbird inside C:\ProgramData\Mozilla\updates only contains

update-config.json

    {"app.update.auto":false}

There is no updates.xml as there is for the Firefox folder.

Note sure if this affects anything as all is working well for Firefox, but both Firefox and Thunderbird profiles are located on a 2nd drive (makes it a lot easier if I ever have to restore from an image to Not wipe out my data).

I don't think the location of the profile affects the updates folder, as long as the program itself is installed on the C drive. If it's empty, that may be because no previous versions were installed. So, at the moment, I can't explain the notifications.

There have only been two versions of Thunderbird on this machine.

I'd keep checking in 'about thunderbird, and it would always say no updates were available - so I was on a VERY old version for quite some time.

Then I noticed my 'old version issue' on 1/17 and downloaded 68.4.1 from http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ to upgrade the very old version.

Soon after this, I got the update msg that I've been getting each day from thunderbird, so I went to 'about thunderbird' and it said no update was available.

But, I went directly to the http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ page and found 68.4.2 and downloaded that and installed it.

Then, I still keep getting update messages.

It's causing me no grief, but ... I like Thunderbird and want the user experience for all users to be good, so I'm mentioning it here.

If there's no obvious solution, I'll just keep regularly checking on Tools ->Options -> Update (and maybe a sanity check on the http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ page - and not worry about it.

Thanks!
