Why does the "check for updates...." not go beyond the end of a major release? 2.0.0.24 to 3.0.1 or 10.0.1 or 52.8.0?

Because I have not had any problems for years I've had no need to check for updates. Most of my software alerts when there are updates. I'm sure that I have checked over the years. I have gone under "Help" and selected "Check for Updates....". Just did today and it says no updates available.

I started having problems with emails not being able to display images a few months ago. "Thunderbird can't connect securely to www.???.com because the site uses a security protocol which isn't enabled."

Searched but only found some 2007 references and only dealing with Gmail and other things not relevant to my system. Tried to ignore until today.

After selecting "Check for Updates...." again and getting no updates available I decided to check your site for the latest version. WTF! I am currently using version 2.0.0.24, the latest is 52.8.0??????????

I haven't installed yet so I'm hoping this will fix my problem.

I'm not sure how it can be done but try to alert other poor shmucks like me that we should rely on the "Check for Updates....".

Check for updates from super old versions goes in steps. And in some cases you might not succeed in getting to the latest version.

The short path is to back up your Thunderbird data https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile for safe keeping, and then download and install the latest version from http://getthunderbird.com/

I would have been ok if it went in steps. Problem is it always said there was no update. No steps at all.....for years. With it always saying there was no update available I didn't think there was a need to check the website for later versions.

Immediately after noticing there were tons of updates I downloaded the latest version and installed. Everything came over except my Pop & SMTP passwords.....which I haven't needed to know for years. Figured it out and I'm up and running with 52.8.0.
