Hi, this should work: Go to browser.tabs.tabClipWidth and edit it to a lower number - try 80. Then restart Firefox.

Note that you can always close a tab with a middle-click with the mouse wheel or via the right-click context menu.

You can want to modify the browser.tabs.tabMinWidth pref as well.
