When I try to delete or dismiss items on top sites I have to do it multiple times. Why?

For me, this has been happening over multiple versions of FF. Even before Quantum. I can select "delete" and/or "dismiss" more than once and the site shows up later, even though I have not left the "new page" tab. This is not only time consuming, but also a waste of time since it doesn't work. Where are this sites located I'd like to delete all of them manually to save time and effort.

Note that if you click Dismiss then you store a hash of the website in a pref on the about:config page, so if you do this very often then this pref can grow quite large. Delete removes the URL form the history and doesn't have this disadvantage.

Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in prefs that you can find on the about:config page.

  • browser.newtabpage.blocked => websites removed by clicking the X (Dismiss) button in a tile
  • browser.newtabpage.pinned => websites pinned to a tile

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.
