I just upgraded to the Firefox Quantum latest release (58.0.2). When I try to open a window in privacy mode, the orange indicator that used to display near the top-right of the screen does not display. Is privacy mode not working or how do I know my window is in privacy mode?

Chosen solution

Are you possibly using permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History) or are you running Firefox in regular mode and open a New Private Window?

If you are in permanent PB mode then you won't see the purple mask to indicate that PB mode is active since all windows are PB mode windows by default.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
