Since updating to FF57 it cannot find my profile anymore, UTF-8 seems to be part of the problem

I have an unusual Windows installation that routinely seems to trigger 8bit / wide char problems in software. It seems that FF57 (Quantum) is affected as well. The user-visible symptom is that starting Firefox fails with the well-known "Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded" dialog. Running firefox with "-p" or any other command line flag yields the same result.

Since this indicated that I'm running into a problem I encounter from time to time let me give you some context: I'm running on Windows 10 which was originally installed in the Japanese-language version. My username contains the Umlaut "ü," and so does the path of my home directory. I later -- after creating the user account -- changed the UI language to English (some Japanese remains here and there). Japanese is a bit particular about paths (for historical reasons it uses or rather prints the Yen symbol as path separator, not the backslash). In fact some of the file handling stuff seems to happen in Codepage 932 which mixes backslash and the yen symbol. So correctness with the added Umlaut (which doesn't exist in Japanese) makes for a nice stress test of file name operations, and I have repeatedly run into very weird software failure.

Back to my analysis: given my expectation that the Umlaut would be to blame I uses the standard Process Monitor development tool you can download from MS and looked out for calls that contain profile in the path. And lo and behold there is a suspect in the attached screenshot. Please observe how the umlaut between the two red boxes suddenly disappears, and the PATH NOT FOUND error appears. I searched the registry for possibly related entries, but didn't find any.

I cannot add troubleshooting information because I cannot run firefox, as you might have already figured out.

Sorry, the screenshot didn't make it through the first time. (It's fairly wide, so it may not blow up to a readable size on a mobile device.)

Ya.. screenshot is big.. Ya sounds like a unusual setup. To bad can not download Japanese version and switch over. A language pack would not be enough for the UI.

his the best way to uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved.

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

Then Tools --> Options --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Hardware Acceleration might have also been a issue so run it and see and turn things back on and test it.

Going back : unfortunately 56.0.2 is no longer safe to use for every day use, but 52.5.0 ESR is! It will continue to get security updates until May 2018, and you can download and install it from this page: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

This all I can come up with : https://wiki.mozilla.org/Installer:Command_Line_Arguments and https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Command_Line_Options

So what would you like to do ?

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Thanks for the quick reply. You can click on the screenshot and it will become readable.

Can you give some explanation why you think these steps would help? It seems to be an issue in path processing in Firefox, given the sequence in the screenshot. Do you think it reads the folder location from some other place (i.e. the registry) in between?

I think the best for me is to back up to an older version for the time being. Thanks for pointing out which versions are still receiving support.
