Hi, I just upgrade from 56.0.2 to 57 on my imac running 10.10.5. First thing that happened is my tabs that I had opened all crashed. Not a single one of them worked. Tried reloading all and nothing happened. So I tried quitting and opening the program again, same thing but this time firefox forgot where the tabs were going (no url) but still crashed. I tried opening a new tab and new window, same crashed tab report but no way to submit the crash.

I deleted the Mozilla and Firefox folders in the ~/Library/Application Support folder and it didn't make a difference. So at this point I've completely erase firefox from my mac and reinstalled it and still getting the same crashed tab error no matter what I do.

Interestingly, if I open firefox from directly from the dmg it works perfectly fine one I've removed the 2 folders mentioned above plus do not have firefox in my Applications folder. I'm actually posting through this method right now.

If I copy firefox over to the hdd and then reopen it, doesn't work.

I'm at a loss. Any help is appreciated.

Hello, let's try a Refresh!

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Did this fix the problem? if it did, mark as solution!

Thank you.

Hi MKII, are there any other suggestions you have? This has rendered firefox useless to me and I really don't want to switch back to chrome or safari...

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

Please : go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security panel and under Permissions check (put a tick in the box) the setting to Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser.

Monitor in Task Manager. Should stay below 2 gigs. If excessive then do below and monitor and change if need to...Test and go up again , go back down, it will eventually get a zone you and it can live with.

Go to the 3 Bar Menu then Options --> General --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 1 = No Multiprocessor = slow again. Try 2 Restart Firefox after making these changes please.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Perhaps you have a video driver issue, be sure your video drivers are up to date. Thank you.

Can you open a blank page (about:blank) if you start Firefox via a terminal window?

Open a terminal window to start Firefox (firefox or firefox-bin) with command line switches.

  • Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
  • /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -url about:blank

I have an imac, they don't really update the drivers very often.

It seems upgrading to quantum 57.0.4 has resolved my issue. I don't know how or why but things seem to be working now. Keeping my fingers crossed nothing breaks again.
