Sorry, yes, the first part is a known problem. Office freaks out when your default browser is removed without first making a different browser your default. Please see this article: How to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit Firefox.

Regarding "some web sites will not open a new tab" what do you mean? Is that something you're asking the site to do, or something the site is complaining it needs to do but can't?
