Firefox continues to crash despite me trying all the steps suggested here so I do not know what to do now other than to switch to another browser
Firefox starts and then crashes after a minute or two. Sometimes it will work for hours. It is completely erratic. I have tried every thing suggested including a complete uninstall and re installation and the problem continues. I am using version 55.0.3 (64-bit) running on Windows 10.. What else can I do. I really do not want to have to switch to another browser, but I might have to do just that

First thing to try is to refresh the ol profile. In your "about:support" page click on "refresh firefox" then restart and test. (That means with no old addons installed, they are depreciated and cause the exact problems you mentioned)
what exactly are you doing when it crashes?

What security software do you have?
Make sure that everything is updated to the latest version.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if that works.
- Windows: hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox
- Mac: hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
