uninstall and reset fail to eliminate frequent crashing and slowness

more options

Using windows Vista on my desk top. Have been using Firefox since inception, but now it frequently crashes and is often painfully slow. I do not similar trouble with Internet Explorer or Google Browsers but would prefer to use FireFox if I can only get the crashing to stop.

What I have done is complete the uninstall Firefox and bitguard, redownload and install current version of Firefox. But problem continues to occur frequently.

Any suggestions?

Thank you for providing your browser details, which shows that you have a lot of garbage add-ons that probably were inserted by some freeware you installed. Cleaning up will take a couple of steps.

First, you might want to restart in Firefox's Safe Mode and work that way for a while until you can remove some of the problem software.

If Firefox is running:

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key while double-clicking the Firefox icon.

You should get a small dialog. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Next, download the scanning and cleanup tools listed in this article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware (they should all be free, except Hitman Pro might be a limited time trial).

At this point, you can exit Firefox.

Before running the scanners, I suggest visiting the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the Installed on column heading to bring the most recent additions to the top. This should show what was bundled together and let you more easily spot the likely culprits. You might be successful in removing some of them here.

Then run the scanners.

Finally, check the Add-ons page in Firefox to disable or remove unwanted extensions. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable or remove.

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Is Firefox more stable?

Finally, you appear to have a user.js file in your Firefox profile folder. Firefox reads this file when it starts up, and overrides your preferences with whatever is in the file. This article describes how to track down and remove it: How to fix preferences that won't save.
