I am unable to make a Skype call. When I try, I get a message stating "Skype calls are temporarily unavailable in Firefox". Can anyone help with this?

I am currently using Firefox 53.0.2, which is up to date, I believe.

Separate issue : your System Details show : Installed Plug-ins : Shockwave Flash 22.0.r0 and Flash 25.0 r0 Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer. Flash: Grab the uninstaller from here:

http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html Uninstall Flash Player | Windows

Then reinstall the latest version. Note: Windows users should download the active_x for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the active_x.

Flash Player Version: 25.0.0.171

Hello to Happy 112,

In response to your post about having 2 versions of Flash. Thank you for going into detail about how to remove & then reinstall! However this may be beyond my limited computer ability. I will give it a try, but just not tonight.

Before I try, here are 2 dumb questions. 1) Is Shockwave Flash the same plugin as Adobe Flash? And are there viruses that can be carried when Adobe Flash is installed?

2) I have Windows 8.1, so should I use the 2nd install you gave, for other programs, and then select Windows 10/Windows 8?

I really appreciate your assistance!

To Happy 112,

Thanks also for posting the bug report. Although my Flash issue needs to be fixed, it sounds like that will not solve the Skype problem. The people posting in the bug report are way beyond anything I can comprehend. If they can set up a meeting with Microsoft to discuss the Firefox/ Skype problem, maybe they can come up with a solution.

Thanks again, sunny day

Re the Flash issue : For now you can set the old version of Shockwave Flash to 'Never Activate'. As for the Adobe Flash Player : You can use either link   -   it won't come with any creepy stuff like a virus,   but you may be offered to download McAfee as well, which of course you can refuse. Sometimes you may find that a program called 'True Key' came along when you downloaded Flash Player.   If so :   you can simply remove it from Windows Control Panel.

Re Skype : Let's keep our fingers crossed that this will be fixed soon   !

I looked at

  • Bug 1348849 - Voice/Video calls with Skype for Web does not work on Firefox

I even made a comment in the bug and linked it to this thread.

Happy112, Does Skype work for you ? I am not seeing an issue. I am not clear from the bug exactly what the problem is and what versions of Firefox etc are affected.

sunny-day I presume if you make your InternetExplorer the default browser on your Windows 8.1 that Skype will work again. You can always switch it back to be Firefox as the default browser IF Skype fixes it to work again with Firefox. Note setting IE as your default browser does not stop you opening up Firefox and using it for all your other day to day browsing. See also

It will be interesting to know what information you obtain from the Skype support people - I am guessing they will tell you to use IE/Edge. I believe MS bought Skype a few years ago.

Hi Happy112,

Re the Flash issue: I followed your suggestion to set the old version of Shockwave Flash to 'Never Activate', b/c the uninstall was looking too complicated. I'm still not very good at Windows 8.1, wish I could go back to version 7, or XP.

But I did install the newest Adobe Flash player 25.0.0.171- hopefully it will be good for a while.

Thanks again for your assistance. Sending my Skype question to their Customer Service now

Hello John99,

Thanks for your suggestion to use Internet Explorer temporarily, in order to get to Skype. However, I feel more secure with Firefox & I'll just wait till the problem gets resolved. If I want to make video calls in the meantime, I can just video chat thru gmail, or an app on my phone.

Thanks also for the link to set my default browser, that will be helpful.

I will post when I get a response from Skype customer service. I knew that Microsoft took over Skype a few years ago, and making it accessible thru Firefox may not be a priority.

You can uninstall and reinstall Flash by using the Flash uninstaller.

You can find the installation path of all plugins on the about:plugins page.

To Cor-el,

Happy112 already posted the link to uninstall older versions of flash player. But it's too complicated for me, so I just followed her suggestion to set the old version of Shockwave Flash to 'Never Activate'. And then I used the same link you posted to install the newest version.

Thank you for posting the link for issues regarding plugins. I will save that as it may be useful later.

I appreciate your assistance, now on to the Skype question.

To all Contiributors.

I just tried to contact Skype Customer Service thru the link below that Happy112 suggested-

https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA1170/how-do-i-contact-skype-customer-service

However there was a message that they could not connect to customer service. The message suggested I check FAQ's, or the Skype Community. But I think I will try customer service again on Monday, they may be closed for the weekend.

Running the Flash uninstalled is only clicking the download button and saving the file to the desktop. Then you can close Firefox (File > Quit) and click the shortcut icon of the Flash uninstaller on the desktop to uninstall Flash. You will have to download and reinstall the current Flash version.

You can download the latest Flash player for Firefox via this page:
