Why cant i send a email in a foreign language but i can send fm base account?

I have tried to send numerous emails to my friends living in Germany who don't speak or write English. I can't send from Thunderbird but i can go to my original account at wind stream and have no problem sending from there. What must i do to correct this in Thunderbird  ?
