For about two weeks now I have been trying to discover what is wrong with my Thunderbird. One day it just stopped loading and I would have to force quit the program. I reinstalled and reinstalled and reinstalled. I have finally found the where in the profile but I'm not sure how to fix it without losing my emails. After copying my old profile file by file I found that pref.js is the culprit. After copying that file into the new profile I get the hang. Here's the problem. I'm missing folders and emails until I copy this over. So I need to use a scalpel not a machete to fix this. I've printed out the Preference file but it's overwhelming and I'm not sure exactly where the problem lays.

OS X v. 10.11.6 Fresh download of Thunderbird

Do I need to attach the pref.js file for review or is this a known issue that someone can say find this and eradicate?

have you tried starting Thunderbird and holding the shift key to place it into safe mode?

Often these issues are related to a theme or add-on referenced by the Prefs.js file
