I do not want to waste you time, but I am now an "ex-Google" application person for varied reasons, mostly security breaches, destroying tons of my data/digital files.

I am attempting to transition my agency over to all Mozilla products, but I have the following questions, at least for starters:

1. How is the FF browser more secure than others? What makes FF as such?

2. Is Thunderbird still the cadillac email Mozilla platform because I question exactly what Sea Monkey is.

3. The only "thing" that I notice about FF in conjunction with my internet service is that sometimes it freezes or lags. But I see that in FF settings, you have a nice menu of adjustable network settings, as I have attached to this email. Could you please tell me how, why and what to tweak these to please? I feel certain that something is not jamming well with my ISP.

4. Could you explain what Focus by FF is, and Webmaker? If this is not a web design platform, what website host/website design platform would you recommend for a beginner like me that would additionally interface with Mozilla products well. I have been fooling around a bit with Adobe's new "Portfolio" web designer/host platform - very interesting, but they leave you out in the cold - no support.

5. If I use Thunderbird, is that totally secure, or as secure as IMAP accounts can be, or do you think that I should change my domain email to Exchange accounts, or what would be the best take on this?

6. Do you know of anyone that would give me a bit of training on all this? I also would like to know some of your better add on apps/extensions. I am a bit leary of "extensions" - or at least in the Google Chrome world they inevitably made the browser crash nonstop.

I think that this is enough to lay on you now - but I do not know where to post elsewhere yet. You appear quite accomplished so I simply trusted your answers.

I guess at this point I want to get OFF Google's email servers onto something else - any idea how I should route things? I do not know what Thunderbird likes or supports.

Peace and thanks a lot,

Erik

Hi Erik

Thank you for your questions. I will do my best to help answer them....

1. How is the FF browser more secure than others? What makes FF as such?

Firefox is open source software, developed and supported by a global community. Another big open source project (Linux) has the maxim that "many eyes make bugs shallow", and the same is true here. With such a community of people spotting and helping fix issues when they arise (not to mention helping contribute to the design and build), we reckon that Firefox is a secure browser. But we also appreciate that this is an "arms race" and we are not complacent and are constantly working to make the best even better.

2. Is Thunderbird still the cadillac email Mozilla platform because I question exactly what Sea Monkey is.

Sea Monkey is a community supported continuation of a former Mozilla suite of software that comprised a web-browser, advanced e-mail, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editor. You can find out more about it here.

Thunderbird is a piece of Mozilla software that is due to be moved to an external party. It is not expected to "disappear" - far from it. Thunderbird is still very widely used by individuals (like me!) as well as government bodies and it is hoped that in its new home it will receive further support. I have been using it for over seven years and it serves me well as a mail and calendar tool, as well as an IRC client (it also has an inbuilt RSS client). You can download it from here.

3. The only "thing" that I notice about FF in conjunction with my internet service is that sometimes it freezes or lags.

Thank you for including the screen shot - really useful! I have mine set to "Use system proxy settings" and do not have any issues. I recommend you try that and then come back to us if you are having further issues of a similar nature.

4. Could you explain what Focus by FF is, and Webmaker? If this is not a web design platform, what website host/website design platform would you recommend for a beginner like me that would additionally interface with Mozilla products well.

Focus by Firefox is an app for OSX that helps protect peoples privacy on iPhone. Webmaker is an educational tool to help people understand the concepts behind building content for the web.

If you are looking for open source web developer tools, I would recommend you have a look at Firefox Developer Edition. It is a pre-release version of Firefox (that you can use as your web browser) designed for web developers. I am not a web developer myself, but I know it has been made with the contribution of those that are and is a popular tool. You can download it (and find out more) here. We also have a developer community, Mozilla Developer Network, that you may find useful. You can see more about this here.

5. If I use Thunderbird, is that totally secure, or as secure as IMAP accounts can be, or do you think that I should change my domain email to Exchange accounts, or what would be the best take on this?

As far as I am aware, Thunderbird is a secure piece of software (I use it myself). With regards to domains and connections, i would recommend consulting a dedicated security forum or expert.

6. Do you know of anyone that would give me a bit of training on all this? I also would like to know some of your better add on apps/extensions.

I would be happy to do my best. Please appreciate that this would be without warranty and could be fairly generic. Feel free to drop me a private message (click on my name (link) and select "Private message") with what you are trying to do.

With regards to add-ons, the possibilities are endless. So many options that can be used to add functionality or just make Firefox look different. Let me know what kind of thing you are looking for and I may be able to help. Alternatively, browse the collection here.

I sincerely hope that I have helped answer your questions. if not, please come back here and we will do out best to look into a different solution for you.
