Firefox within the past week started to have an issue where the window goes black and unresponsive. Except it is still responsive just that trying to switch tabs or go to options does not work, however I can close the tab by guessing and then reopen Firefox so that page does not load. A few examples of pages that don't work are: This page, Firefox's Submit feedback page, Sega.com and a few others.

I have tried to disabling all my add-ons and turned off Hardware acceleration. This does nothing though. The only fix I can get is safe mode (Had to use it just to write this), however I need a few of my add-ons to be secure.

What else can I do to fix my Firefox other than waiting and hoping it resolves itself?

Were all the extensions that show as disabled in the System Details list already disabled?

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder that stores session data. When sessionstore.js is deleted you lose pinned tabs and Tab Groups and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

You may have to rename the sessionstore-backups folder as well.

Firefox uses the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder to store session data, but this file is only present when Firefox is closed. The sessionstore.js file is created from recovery.js when you close Firefox and is removed and copied to previous.js when you start Firefox to make is possible to restore the session at any time.

Backup the session files in the sessionstore-backups folder in the Firefox Profile Folder to make sure not to lose possible important session data. Do NOT close Firefox when Firefox is already running.

You will normally find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:

previous.js (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.js from previous session that was loaded successfully)
recovery.js (latest version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
recovery.bak (previous version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
upgrade.js-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.js to replace the current file (make a backup copy of the current sessionstore.js).

All those extensions are normally enabled except Rikaichan and Norton. I had to go into safe-mode just to write that question as that page was one that "Crashed" My Firefox. sessionstore.js had no information on what my issue is.

My problem seems to be spreading to other sites like Facebook but seem to be slightly different and only from the 3d panoramic view photos. Facebook loads then when I scroll down it goes into an infinite loop of what I can see it duplicates it as I scroll. Then when I try to reload or switch tabs it goes black.

These are images of what it looks like when it goes black. The first is the help>troubleshooting information. The second is what it looks like when I try switching to my email. (the scroll bar is in the right place for my email) So it is responsive and shows the scroll bars in the right places but every thing is black. I also can't move tabs around as they don't update graphically. Oddly enough I can close them but won't see them truly close, until I restart Firefox.

[edit] Thought I should also mention I can move the window around with out issue.

Sorry for it taking awhile for me to post an update, Thanks for helping me.

Firefox may have graphical glitches when memory is getting very full, but then performance also bogs down, so you would tend to see those together.

Otherwise, taking a cue from the Safe Mode test: could you try disabling Firefox from using hardware acceleration? Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, click Advanced. On the right side, with the "General" mini-tab active, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available".

This takes effect the next time you exit Firefox and start it up again. Any difference?

Since hardware acceleration improves the appearance of fonts and animations, you may want to check whether graphics card/chipset driver updates are available for your system. This article suggests safe ways to do that: Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL.

I have tried turning off hardware acceleration and restarted Firefox but this did not help. I have tried every combination of add-ons being on/off along with Hardware Acceleration off and nothing seems to work except safe-mode.

[edit] I don't think it is memory getting full because I have 16GB and it is usually at 4GB used when browsing.

Thank you so much. I had to go to the 3 bar menu then to help and then to about Firefox to update. Meaning it was not updating automatically. The problem is mostly fixed now. Certain things don't show up, unless I am in Safe mode (for example, Mozilla Support Profile Pictures. On another site, the media buttons on a music player don't show and the countdown that usually keeps going is frozen). However the pages not rendering black appears to be gone, so this is good enough for now.

I want to thank you again for going out of your way and finding my support question again and helping me solve my issue.
