Duplicated Bookmarks when seldom needed PC gets back online after months

I have Firefox (version 40 or newer) installed with FirefoxSync enabled on multiple PCs. Some of these PCs are really seldom used.

Basically FirefoxSync works well on all PCs. But when I open Firefox on a PC which was offline over several months, then it seems FirefoxSync does not not remember, that the Bookmarks from this seldom used client have been already added during the last synced months ago.

It seems all bookmarks stored on the seldom used client are wrongly treated like new – because they suddenly appear as duplicates on my other (frequently used) PCs.

I don't see this problem happen as long the client is used frequently and I guess the issue is caused by a insufficient aging strategy inside the FirefoxSync architecture.

Is there a way to increase threshold for this aging mechanism or any other workaround?

Note that you can restore the bookmarks from a backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore.

The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

Restoring a JSON backup will replace all bookmarks.

Hi cor-el,

>Did the name of any of the connected devices got changed? Since there were weeks or months in between, I can not 100% exclude that I haven't changed any device name in the meantime.

Do you belief a device name change can causse the issue? If you confrim yes, I will avoid name changes, observe the behaviour again over couple months and report the result back to this thread.

Is it similar critrical to add a new device?
