I do like firefox since its birth! Now I'm upset with it, cause several times a year some bookmark folders simply vanish, mainly after updates, but not only! I'm an attentive fellow, It's not due to bad manips, it's just that the bookmark managing system isn't stable nor well encapsulated. My bookmarks are 24 megas, super well organized, they're my goldmine! Several people reported that issue and no one at Mozilla listens.

Next time I'll switch to Chrome, even if their bookmark manager is less handy...

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

Restore Bookmark Backups

To open the Bookmarks Manager, press the Alt or F10 key bring up the tool bar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Restore. From the list, pick the file you want and click it.

Hi Fred, thank you for your concern & the workaround, however 3 points:

- When we restore the way you suggest, does the manip create duplicates or just re place the missing bookmark folders? Do we have to delete'em all before restoring?

- I really would like to have your developers fixing that, as we don't want to get the bad surprise when looking for a folder that vanished, nor wasting time with manipulations... Also because some folders we don't use frequently might be deleted without us noticing it.

- Also sometimes some folders migrate, and we find them in weird locations...

If the problem is not reported, the developers can't fix it. Others have come here with the same issue. Most of the time, it turns out the problem was an add-on or something outside.Firefox.

How often does this happen do you think?

I think the above replaces the current bookmark file with the saved file.

There is a way to create backup files that would merge with the current. To open the Bookmarks Manager, press the Alt or F10 key bring up the tool bar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Export Bookmarks To HTML, and follow the prompts and save it to a HTML file. Copy the file to another computer. Repeat the instructions above, BUT select Import Bookmarks From HTML,

Are you using Sync to sync the bookmarks?

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync while performing maintenance/repair efforts to files in the Firefox profile folder.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.
