My wife checks her emails with Firefox - it will no longer load when the icon is clicked, even though a newer version was recently downloaded.
The laptop is using Windows 7

Well, after futzing around a bit, Firefox did load - not sure yet if it will continue, but will try again. By icon, I meant the Firefox icon on the opening window. I couldn't get it to open when the icon was clicked. Thanks again, I'll know soon if the problem was fixed.
Still have the problem - thought I had described it, but apparently failed. On the Windows background, there is a Firefox icon - when I click on it, there is the little circle indicating movement, but Firefox does not appear. Repeating the click brings up the circle again, but Firefox still doesn't load.
This could be several problems. Try this first;
Right click on the taskbar icon and select Open New Window. Sometimes this works. If it opens, close it by Menu > File > Exit.
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up in Windows. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/997866 {web link}
Tried to open a new window from the taskbar - no change
Open the Task Manager. Win 7 = <Ctrl><Alt>
Look under Applications. Is Firefox listed? If not, look under Processes.
Right click and select End Process/Task
