Why does clicking a Gmail url link not "fully" load or open in new tab as before version 39.0? Mac

Hi folks thanks in advance. Activating a Gmail link opens a new tab, as before, but now it just lists the long cryptic url and no content in the tab's window? No problems for year. Gmail has not (obviously) changed, nor have I changed settings. Yep I am on a Macbook Pro. Thanks!
