I just installed Mozilla firefox again, and for some reason this time it installed a very unsightly URL/search bat at the very top of my screen that does not go away when i close the browser i would very much like to know if there is any way to remove this unsightly useless toolbar thing.

I figured it out, I think that it was something that had been installed with the Firefox installer because of those pages towards the end of the installer that look like terms and services, but are making you accept downloads of other programs (a very dirty and annoying trick). It was not an add on I had to use control panel to uninstall it.

Please provide a screenshot.

See this support article. How do I create a screenshot of my problem? It is best to use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed a maximum file size of 1 MB.

Then use the Browse .... button below the Post a Reply text box to upload the screenshot.

Can you right-click this toolbar?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Hmm, where did that come from??

If you were to use it -- and maybe it's better not to -- what search engine does it load results on? Perhaps if you post the URL of the results page some of the parameters will help identify the culprit.

In a web search, the closest thing I found was a reference to a program named Web Bar, which tends to be bundled with free downloads. Could you check here:

Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help surface undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Be suspicious of everything you do not recognize/remember, as malware often uses important or innocent sounding names to discourage you from removing it. Take out as much trash as possible here.

Alternately, if you check the Windows 8 Task Manager, can you find any unknown program that might be associated with that bar? You can use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch the Task Manager. Check the "Processes" tab, which on Windows 8 usually will have an entry for each application window. Can you trace any of them to that bar?

While you're in the Task Manager, if you switch over to the Details tab, after exiting out of Firefox, does firefox.exe disappear from the process list or is it lingering?

That is not part of the official Firefox release. Could you check your history for where you got the installer that bundled in the extras?
