I have four Wordpress blogs that I visit. Wordpress has a black bar at the top of the screen that you can click on and it'll bring you back to the top of the page. I am running FF 38.0.5, and on one of these blogs this feature stopped working. I ran in safe mode and the feature worked correctly. When I unistalled each add on one by one to figure out which one it might be, the problem still persists. How can this be??

Chosen solution

Thanks, I figured out the problem, quite by accident too. I've wanted to try uBlock over Adblock for quite some time......and whaddya know! Weird, because I had disabled Adblock too.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Hello CT71, try disabling graphics hardware acceleration.

You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

Then perform these steps:

  1. Open Firefox Options tab as follows, click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options.
  2. In the Firefox Options tab, click the Advanced tab, then select General.
  3. In the settings list, you should find the Use hardware acceleration when available checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
  4. Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

(Except the extensions, in safe mode AND hardware acceleration is disable) :-)

Thank you.

@ideato: Yes, I had already tried hardware acceleration, to no avail. As far as upgrading my graphics driver, that is something sort of above my pay scale, not very comfortable in doing that. I can say that it is a brand new computer, and all four of these wordpress blogs are done by the same person, so the fact that 3 of them work and one doesn't is kinda odd.

Did you try the default theme?

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder in profile folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used
  • JavaScript JIT compilers are disabled
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

It's very rare, but occasionally I hear about self-hiding extensions. Because they are not visible in regular mode, you cannot disable them manually....

If you check the support information page, can you see any extensions enabled? The list is a bit down the page. You can open it using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

@cor-el: I shows I only have the default.

@jscher2000: All the extensions listed on the support page are the same as in the add-ons manager.

Why don't I have that bar on my blog?! I have a black bar when I'm logged into the site, but I don't see a return-to-top button. Perhaps it's something unique to their WordPress theme... can you post a link to the one that isn't working for you?

Can you attach a screenshot?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB

Can you post the extensions?

Not sure if I did it right or not, but hopefully an image appears.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

more options

To my knowledge I don't have any added Toolbars, and disabling anything on my Antivirus doesn't seem like the greatest solution. I d'loaded my AV fairly stock anyways, without alot of the added add ons. But maybe I'm wrong.

more options

Fred isn't suggesting disabling your antivirus software, but only the optional extensions that comes with some AV suites.

Does it make any difference if you make a site-specific exception in your Adblock extensions for the blog with the problem? I don't know how that works, but understand from other posts that it's possible. Or there may be a way to just turn ABP off temporarily from its toolbar button to test the site with no blocking (try reloading the site bypassing the cache using Ctrl+Shift+r).

If extensions are not involved, it's hard to think of how it might affect one button on one site, but did you ever create a userContent.css file? That's an optional file you can use to override style rules on websites, and is something disabled in Firefox's Safe Mode. Firefox doesn't include a userContent.css file, so this isn't likely to have happened without your participation.

I've disabled, or temporarily turned off everything I know. Nothing has worked. I'm gonna give up, it's just irritating me too much now. The really odd thing is that out of the four blogs, which are operated by the same person, two work perfectly, one does not work at all, and the other I thought didn't work but apparently it works on and off. They all work perfect on my old XP machine, but not this brand new computer. Thanks for all the help, I just cannot take it anymore though.

Sorry we couldn't spot it.

As a short-term workaround, the Home key or Ctrl+Home usually get you back to the top of a page. (If the cursor is in a multi-line editing control, that only takes you to the top of the editing area.)

If you decide to post the URLs, we could compare to see whether we can figure out the difference.

Thanks. My hand is always on the mouse, not a big keyboard shortcut guy. I'll probably eventually get to the bottom of this. But right now, it's just taking up to much of my time.

Load the web page. After the page is loaded, click the down arrow next to the AdBlock icon. Now select Disable on <web site>.

Are there any error messages in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer)?

Can you attach a screenshot that shows this toolbar?

Can you right-click this toolbar and open the Inspector (Inspect Element)?

more options

Here's the web console. I'm unsure what toolbar in the inspector that I'm supposed to right click though.

Sorry, couldn't get the whole page in one shot.
