I believe my wife somehow dragged the vertical scroll bar off screen. I have not been able to get it back. Usually we also don't have the Back button either. And the Menu bar is missing at the top of the screen is missing at websites, so we can't do things like Print or Print Preview, either.

NOTHING anybody has suggested so far has done any good.

If the window Firefox is using is too big make it smaller. If the resize buttons and scroll bar are present but just off screen try the keyboard shortcut Alt + Space

If this is a problem with missing or inactive buttons and scroll bars and is not going away and only occurred after you updated Firefox to version38 read the following article and try disabling Hardware Acceleration then reviewing the graphic drivers available.

Please say how you get on or if you need more help.

I've tried so many things, including various attempts to resize the window, etc. Nothing works! I turned off the Hardware Acceleration, didn't help.

I don't know when the new version of Firefox started, but my troubles began Saturday, May 16, 2015.

I'm seriously considering going to another browser. New things to learn I suppose, but it's got to be better than this.

You could be experiencing this bug that happens when you are running Firefox in Private Browsing mode and you open links in a new window.

  • bug 1166066 - Firefox 38 regression: link in private window with target="_blank" opens window with no tabs/toolbars/menus (bug1166066)

Possible workarounds:

  1. use Options/Preferences > General: "Open new windows in a new tab instead"
  2. Shift+click links to open in a new window with the standard features or use the right-click context menu.

You can modify dom.disable_window_open_feature prefs and change their value to true to prevent a website from disabling toolbars and scroll bars in a pop-up window
