This just changed for me. I think I must have "personalized" something & did it wrong. I suppose you would maybe consider the letters/names of the bookmarks to be "transparent"? (Until I put my mouse on the bookmark... then it "comes to life" in black letters. They used to always be in black...whether I put mouse on them or not. Someone must know some "simple stupid thing" that I changed... without even realizing what I was doing! (I'm getting old, senile, forgetful, etc.. Or is those things all really the same?) My question, again, is < My bookmarks now have icons but the "description" of bookmark is nearly "transparent"? UNTIL I mouse over it & then it shows in black. Why? What do I change. Why? > And I just realized that this "problem", also, is for MOST of the things showing under "File", "Edit", "View", "History", etc. BUT everything seems normal in everything else... it's just in my Firefox browser, 38.0.1. And now I just realized that I can get a New "new text document", New "Folder", etc, but no longer can have/get a New. "Notepad"... so did I change how something "opens"? I'm really losing it! Thank you. RobinV

Hi Robin, I understand that the problem is with the menus on the "classic" top menu bar.

Does the text appear to be light-gray on gray, or some other bad color combination? When you move your mouse up and down a menu, normally you would expect a "highlight" to move behind the text. Do you see that at all?

Firefox Themes

Firefox allows you to customize its appearance using various kinds of themes. Can you check whether you are using one of those optional themes? Please open the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Appearance. On the right side, if "Default 38.0.1" is not selected (if it's grayed out), please Enable it to see whether that makes a difference.

Windows Themes

Firefox has been changing to try to better adapt to what Windows calls "High Contrast" themes. I don't know whether you use one of those themes. It would have been selected in the Windows display settings. You can check the Windows theme you are using as follows:

right-click the Windows desktop and choose Personalize

This should display a control panel screen showing various different sections, such as My Themes, Aero Themes, and Basic and High Contrast Themes. If you look for which one is highlighted -- indicating that is your currently selected theme -- which one is it?

I don't know why... but I'm back to "usual" again! Which I guess is "OK". I started checking the things you mentioned... the "Default 38.0.1 was/is black, & yes most of the text under the top were light gray over gray... but wait!. I had gotten a blue screen while resetting "personalize" stuff & after a couple restarts everything is back to "normal" again. Not exactly what I wanted...wanted different & larger fonts in some instances, but I guess I can live with what I've had for quite a while. It just seemed a bit generic... or is that geriatric? Thanks for your nice & quick reply tho! There are still a few things that I would like to change anyway but I'll try again later & "do less at a time". Thanks again, RobinV

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.
