why is Avast sending me notices to upgrade Firefox?

It's my understanding mozilla automatically upgrades itself. Having gone thru one 'episode' where I did an Avast suggested upgrade and it cost me $$$ to correct the damage, I'm leary about this.

I don't know whether avast! normally would notify you about an update...

You usually can trigger an update using the Help menu:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" icon > About Firefox
  • (menu bar) Help > About Firefox

That's probably the safest method.

Hi, I use Avast and there are a lot of settings that I find are best turned off! The one that is probably causing your issue is Software Updater. You can access this by opening Avast > Settings > Tools. Browser Cleanup is another one that can potentially cause trouble by removing Add-ons! I have everything in there turned off, but that is a decision for you.

A PC restart will be needed before any changes take effect.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

Firefox 37.0.2 is slightly out-of-date. Firefox 38.0 was released on Tuesday May 12th and then turned off; followed by a 38.0.1 "chemspill" update on Friday due to specifics problem with 38.0 that were missed by the Beta testers. Mozilla still may be throttling updates, so not everyone may have gotten Firefox 38 just yet.
