Firefox always asks to update, I do and 'restart to update' but does not. Everytime I open Firefox it wants to update.

This has been a recurring problem. In the past I have had to manually reinstall Firefox from their website each time new version comes out. But then when the next version comes along, it never updates itself again. I would think installing the new, latest version from your website would fix this, but it does not. Why does the update feature of Firefox never work on my Win & system? Every time I install Firefox I use the same folder, but not the default. I am installing into "C:\Program Files(x86)\Internet Applications\Mozilla Firefox". I would hope your updater would be smart enough to know that, but thought I should share. Everything else should be standard.

I wish you would have read my full post. That is what I said I have had to do with every update so far. Are you saying that the Firefox updater never works and no one should ever expect it to work? I don't want to have to keep checking versions of Firefox and manually do a full install every time it needs a minor update because they can't get the updater to work. I have explained the problem already. I need to know how to make the updater work on its own. Monitoring Firefox versions daily and doing a new full install each time a minor update is available is NOT the solution.

Sorry, I had not seen that.

Are you downloading the normal Firefox, or the beta versions?

The link you sent is nothing to do with the problem I described. I have never downloaded a beta version. I am currently running 32.0.2 and when I close and reopen Firefox it asks me permission to update, which I do each time, but version stays the same. If I go to Help-About it says 32.0.2 and "Restart to Update". Every time I click that link it restarts, but version stays the same and Help-About gives the same thing.

What security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?

Try to run the Firefox program once as Administrator (right-click: Run as Administrator).

If that didn't work then do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

I am running Windows7, using only their firewall. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed as the anti-virus.

I performed the following steps as you requested:

1) Run as Admin: a. Closed Firefox and reopened “As Administrator”. It again asked permission to run since it was going to try to do the update again. But it just opened normally. b. When I click on ‘Help-About’ it again says ver. 32.0.2 and downloads a 3.9MB update (again). c. I click restart to update (again) and it still says 32.0.2 and again downloads the same 3.9 MB update, asking again to restart. So Admin made no difference.

2) Uninstall/Reinstall: a. Using your link I then downloaded version 32.0.3 (I had to do the same thing on all prior versions, the last full download was 32.0.2. So this problem has been going on for quite some time. b. I next uninstall both Mozilla Firefox 32.0.2 and Mozilla Maintenance services. I was not asked about removing personal data as you indicated I should have. Since you mentioned that I assume it should have asked. Why not? c. There was no Mozilla folder under C:\Program Files d. There was no Mozilla folder under C:\Program Files(x86) (this is where it had put the “Maintenance Services”, even though I had requested to install Firefox under the “Internet Applications” directory. e. I deleted the Mozilla Firefox folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Applications (even though this was uninstalled, there were five subfolders left and an .nfo file. Clearly Firefox does not do a clean uninstall). Will this bug eventually be fixed to do a clean install and delete all program folders? f. I then installed version 32.0.3. By default it wanted to install to C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox. i. Why is it installing only a 32 bit version when I am running 64 bit Windows 7? ii. I changed the default to the one I used before (but was now deleted): C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Applications\Mozilla Firefox. iii. I did allow it to install the maintenance service again, even though this never works. iv. After installation there was still no Mozilla folder under Program Files, so it did not install any 64 bit – why not? v. It did install the program under …\Internet Applications\Mozilla Firefox, as it should have vi. However, it again made the mistake of installing Mozilla Maintenance Services under C:\Program Files (x86) rather than under the “Internet Applications” submenu as it did the main program as directed. This is an ongoing bug from prior versions. When will this bug ever be fixed so that it is installed in the subfolder selected by the user?

Since this is the same procedure I have to use every time Firefox needs an update, you have not solved my problem. Does anyone at Mozilla care and will get down to the bottom of this? Or should I just delete the Mozilla Maintenance Services since it appears it is not designed to function (at least not in Windows7)?

I have performed the exact steps you indicated and provided you with the steps and the results. Please answer all six questions above. I had highlighted them bold so you could see them, but your web reply stripped the bold, spacing, tabs, etc. and made the above less readable. Also, the Bold in your web reply also does not work - it only put quotes around and would not bold. Since your web response bold does not work either, please carefully find the six questions and answer them. Most importantly I would like to know a fix to this ongoing problem of the updates not working. I am tired of doing this entire process for every little update. Thank you. Bill

Current releases may no longer ask to remove personal data to prevent dataloss. I added this just to be sure as I'm on Linux and can't test have Firefox on Windows behaves.

The maintenance service should work, but you need to allow it in windows and in the firewall in order to allow it to work properly. There is only one 32 bit Firefox release for 32 bit and 64 bit Windows and therefor that version gets installed in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\" location that is used on 64 bit windows versions.

The Mozilla Maintenance service should be installed there as well, so accept the default location for both programs and make sure to allow them in your security software. If you prefer not to use the Mozilla Maintenance service then you will have to update Firefox manually and confirm the UAC that is required in such a case.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Update: "Use a background service to install updates"

With the Mozilla Maintenance service you will only need to confirm this once when you install this service.

You say "allow it in Windows and Firewall". I have not done anything specifically to do that. I assume Firefox should work with Win 7 and Microsoft Security Essentials, but are you saying we have to manually do some steps to "allow" it to work? I would think this would be done automatically with an install.

Odd that the default folder on 64 bit machines is in their 32 bit program folder, but just a bug I guess they will eventually fix.

Since your steps failed, I again installed Firefox from scratch, but just today there was another update and like always, it failed again. I do not want to have to install Firefox from scratch each time there is a little update. But looking at the folders, I see that even this last install did not do what it should. I selected "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Applications\Mozilla Firefox" for the installation. It did as I requested and put Firefox in the correct spot, but then created it's own directory for the Maintenance Service under "C:\Program Files (x86)" and just ignored the location I gave for installation. So it looks like I found the bug in your Maintenance Service program. It is the installer that installs it in the wrong place. You said both must be in the same folder, but the installer is not doing that. I do not want my main Programs File folders cluttered up with every program I ever install and that is why I chose install paths that make sense to group like programs together.

Do you know a work-around to this bug to get the Maintenance Service to install in the directory path I choose during installation? I do not want to have Mozilla directories cluttering up the Programs Files folders, but under the subfolder I specified ("Internet Applications" in my case). Since your software installer allows us to select a folder for installation, it should install all its software in that folder and not ignore my selection and instead install part of the software in some other default location. Especially, if as you say, the Maintenance Service will not work when installed in that default location.

get the Maintenance Service to install in the directory path I choose Maintenance is a separate program and needs its own folder.

allow it in Windows and Firewall

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

In corel's 10/3 post he said in order to work: gets installed in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\" location that is used on 64 bit windows versions. The Mozilla Maintenance service should be installed there as well

But in the Fred McD post it said they must be in different folders.

I did check WIndows FIrewall and Firefox was not listed. Why would the installer not fix this? However, manually adding Firefox did not fix the problem.

It appears that the bug in Firefox is that if I select a directory to install FIrefox it will install Firefox in that directory, but it ignores the directory selection when installing the Maintenance Service and installs Maintenance service wherever it wants (under the "Program Files (x86)" directory). But then according to corel Firefox will not update if they are not both in the same default location. How do I find out a work-around for this bug in the software? How do I install the Maintenance Service so it works when my Firefox is installed in the directory it asked me ("Program Files (x86)/Internet Applications/Mozilla Firefox")? And does anyone know if Mozilla is working to fix this bug? It has been around for a long time now.

Some firewall programs are able to know that a new program / update is okay. But some do not. So if program v12.445 is updated, the firewall may think it is a different unknown program, and close access.

Open the settings of the firewall. There should be an option to alert you if an unknown / new program wants access. Turn it on.

The maintenance service is always installed in its own folder because that is a separate program (can be installed and uninstalled) and can update all installed Firefox versions in case you have more than one Firefox program folder. The maintenance service is always the version that comes with the highest Firefox version in case of beta and other alpha development versions. When you install the maintenance service program then you are asked once to accept the UAC confirmation to download and install updates without the need to confirm this on every update. If updating Firefox isn't working properly then this could be that the maintenance service isn't installed and enabled properly or not allowed in security software.

As I said previously, it is not a firewall problem. I thought it curious that Firefox installer did not make a firewall exception during the many installs, but since the program worked, I don't think that is the problem. And I did add the exception but made no difference on the install.

Again, the problem seems to be the bug in the Maintenance Service. Yes, it is installed, and has been every time I've installed each new version of Firefox (manually from scratch since the Maint Serv has never worked). And, yes, it installs in it's own preferred folder, even though I tell Firefox to install in a path of my choosing. One of the posters suggested that Maintenance Service will not work if I pick my own path for Firefox. If this is true, it is certainly a bug, as the directory selection is part of the installation. It would be nice if the Maintenance Service would be installed in the same root as where I select to put Firefox (C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Applications), but I have learned that it ignores my choice for Maint Serv and only installs Firefox under that root.

So I can't get around Mozilla ignoring my directory choice and cluttering up my Program Files folder, but my problem (as since the start of these posts) is that Maint Serv never has worked. How can I get Maint Serv to update a Firefox version put in a directory that the user chooses (instead of the default)? Has anyone at Mozilla tested this by installing Firefox in an alternate directory and see if the auto updates work?

Still waiting to hear if anyone else is having the same problem with the Maintenance Service. I have selected my own directory for Firefox and Mozilla put Maintenance Service in its own directory path (nothing to do with the folder I chose for Firefox). Someone said that Maintenance Service will not work if we don't use the default Firefox directory, but that doesn't make sense because part of the Firefox setup asks for a destination folder. So has anyone else used their own destination folder and use Maintenance Service? Does it work in that case? In my Win7 machine it has never worked. I still need help. I don't want to keep having to install from scratch but would like to use the maintenance service as it was designed.

Several weeks later and still no help or solution. Does anyone know how to get help with Firefox problems when it cannot be obtained in the support forum? I have eliminated the few suggestions above (like firewall), but still no help with the problem. It is clear that when we use the Firefox install option to install Firefox in a folder of our choice, it does install Firefox into that folder but it installs the Maintenance service folder where it wants, still under (and cluttering up) the main Programs file main folder. I understand it is designed this way and will live with that. But is this why Maintenance Service does not work? Is there a bug in the program that will not allow it to update if we use Firefox's installer to install Firefox in a folder of our choice? No one has confirmed this. If this is a bug, and Mozilla does not plan on fixing it, then I can always uninstall everything and reinstall it all in the default Programs File directory, cluttering it up even more. But if this is not a bug and the installer is designed and works to have the maintenance program update the Firefox program installed in a user-specified directory path, then I'd like to find the real cause for the maintenance service to never work. How can I get help with this? It has been over six weeks since my original post and no one has even stated if this is a known bug or not. I need help to determine how to make maintenance service work.
