Firefox freezes when I try to download files.

Every time I try to download a file, Firefox asks for the directory I want to save it in. The Explorer window opens for the particular directory, but when I press "save" the Download window does not appear and the program freezes. I get the message "Firefox is not responding." This started happening about a week ago. I would appreciate your help since I really like Firefox. JR
