What happened to the automatic new tab that I always had to click on?

Today I noticed there was not a new tab to click on at all times. There always has been. Now I have to go to File and open a New Tab. What changed? is there a setting to fix this? If so I can't find it.

You can choose between open in new tab and open in new window when clicking on a link: Settings - General - Tabs

Use Ctrl + click link, the link will open in a new tab instead of opening in current tab.

That's not the issue. I am aware of that setting. What is different is that there was always a new blank tab waiting at the end of all of my tabs for me to click on. Once I clicked on it, a new blank tab would appear making it a one step maneuver to do a search or enter a URL. No more blank tabs are appearing.

Oh the "+" button is actually a toolbar element, so it's possible to customize (move around, remove etc.) so you can just right click in that space to "Customize toolbar…" and either find the "Open a new tab" button there and move it where comfortable, or just restore the default button layout from that pane.
