Firefox hangs/freezes after 85 update.
Hi everyone,
After the 85.0.0 update and still now with 85.0.1 and 85.0.2 firefox crashes. It's usually happened with clicking a link that'll take action outside of firefox (not a url link but a download attachment link in gmail or a print link). I've also had it happen with placing links from the search bar to the bookmark bar, and just recently opening up the 'show all bookmarks' window.
It'll hang, i won't be able to click anything, and then it'll give me the 'close window' screen. It's never fully crashed and given me an error message. I start up firefox again, restore the session and everything is back to where it was.
I've tried refreshing. I've tried creating a new profile. I've tried uninstalling and downloading 85 direct from mozilla. Nothing seems to be working. I'm going to see how it does for a bit in safe mode, but all the add-ons I have I've had way before the 85 update and all of them are recommended by mozilla.
I'm all ears (eyes?) for solutions!

Jscher2000,
Is the program Process Explorer or Handle?
I'm sorry, it's very unlikely I'll remember, but it wasn't from Microsoft.
I'm going to try to roll back to 84 and see if that fixes anything.
update: downloaded 84, it automatically updated to 86.0. Lets see if the new update fixes anything.
I also noticed I had Mozilla Maintenence Service disabled. I turned that back on - lets see if that changes things too.
happened twice more today. very frustrating. Once was with opening up a Zoom link.
If there is any pattern, its opening up a link or a window to something outside of Firefox. This has never happened actually clicking a link to another website.
I would definitely rather not switch over to chrome... the multi account containers are perfect for what I do, but this is definitely starting to get frustrating.
happened again. clicking to download a word doc in gmail. Here is the error windows gives:

Hi everyone. Just to update you:
Firefox 86 started to have a have a slight black screen when it was starting up. Very slight, there for a blink, but that + hanging/freezing suggested something was up.
I turned off hardware acceleration, and the black screen went away. Ok, great. However, I really want hardware acceleration.
I decided to just roll back to 84. Firefox now works perfectly. No back black screen, no hanging/freezing when clicking a link.
This is my solution for now, as I do have work to do.
I tried running a deep scan with Vipre Plus. It did find a virus. I deleted it, but 85+86 still had the same issues.
I could update my graphics drivers... but would outdated graphics cards be the cause of clicking a link and firefox hanging/freezing?
Hmm, many Linux users have been reporting problems with Firefox 86 that require disabling hardware acceleration, but as you would expect, they are display glitches and not application hangs. It's possible that there is an incompatibility with the driver software for a certain older graphics card or chipset and your symptoms are more severe. But I'm not a graphics geek, so others would need to look at it.
