Firefox doesn't make any noise when the download is completed or when it fails. If you are hearing a noise, it's likely an add-on that's providing this functionality.

Thanks you Wesley, you were right, it was an add-on that never made a sound until this upgrade of Firefox, the noise was as annoying as my mother-in-laws voice, but now both are quiet, many thanks Dan
