When you reset your Firefox account password, you are not just changing a login credential. You are also creating a new encryption key for your account. This is a critical security feature.

Your data is encrypted on your device before it is sent to Mozilla's servers.

The encryption key is derived from your Firefox account password.

Mozilla's servers store your encrypted data, but they do not have your encryption key. They cannot decrypt your data, and neither can anyone else.

When you use the "Forgot Password" feature and reset your password, you are telling the system that you have lost your key. The only way to proceed is to create a brand new one.

This new key cannot decrypt the old data that was encrypted with your previous password. For security reasons, the old, encrypted data is wiped from the servers and a new, empty sync profile is created.

This process is designed to protect your data from unauthorized access if someone were to gain control of your email account. It's a security-first approach, but it has the unfortunate consequence of permanent data loss if you forget your password and don't have a local backup.

What You Can Do Now

Your only hope of recovering your data is to find a device that still has a local, un-wiped copy of your synced data.

Check all your devices: Do you have any other computers, laptops, tablets, or phones where you were logged into your Firefox account before August 31, 2025?

Crucially, do not log out or sync these devices with your "new" account. If you log in to your new, empty account on one of these devices, it will wipe the local data and replace it with the empty profile.

No, Mozilla cannot give you a logins.json file. The logins.json file, which contains your encrypted passwords, is a local file stored on your computer within your Firefox profile folder. Firefox Sync and Mozilla's servers never store this file directly. They only store the encrypted data contained within the file.
