I'm locked out of this site and had to re-register under a different name. Why?

I've had an account at this site for a long time but I rarely visit. I tried today and the login rejected my username and/or email address and password. I requested a password reset and received an email with the link to do so. Yet when I reset it, I was still locked out and received the same error message (i.e., that my username and/or email address and password did not match.) I had to re-register under a different username, password and email address to get to here. I'd like to go back to my original but I can't find any help for this.
