T-Bird freezes after 5 minutes. From start up to freeze.

T-Bird is Freezing (Hang?) from start to freeze was 5 minutes and a few seconds. Have turned off hardware acceleration and now it freezes at just under 5 minutes. Have put on updates. Currently 153.0.1esr (64-bit). I have captured profile, and re-installed and picked up the profile. Still freezes. Turned off AV. Still freezes. I have compressed and "repaired" all folders. Still Freezes. I forced folders to get rid of anything older than 30 days. Still freezes.

I have been running the task manager, and T-Bird in frozen state is only using 4.3% of CPU at most. I do not see any slowdowns for any other program. So this is not a CPU constrained problem. And it certainly is not memory constrained.

All this started within the past month and I think it was after I put on an ESR update (don't remember which one).

I can kill T-Bird and start it and it will get mail if any, and will function for about 5 minutes and then freezes (or hangs). The system is set to fetch mail on start up and then every 27 minutes. I am not using Account hub (and don't know what it does).

One oddity -- This is a W11 Home system, and Mozilla keeps saying it is a W10 system. Could this be the problem? Wife is running a lesser laptop. It is also running T-Bird, but her O/S is a W11 Pro and she is not having this problem.

What is your anti-virus software?

Turned off AV. Still freezes.

The only reliable way to turn off anti-virus software is to start Windows 11 in safe mode with networking enabled. Does the problem go away?

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software. This is a troubleshooting step, not a solution.

Note, Windows safe mode also disables WiFi. So you'd need a wired LAN connection for it.

Mozilla keeps saying it is a W10 system.

Not sure what this means. You'd need to explain this in more detail. I somehow doubt that this is related to your problem though.

You already asked the same question here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1594071

Please stop starting duplicate topics, this is annoying.

Hi: Sorry about the duplicate. I had lost it and so started over.

1A) My antivirus was Total AV. Uninstalled it and got the same results as I did with Windows in Safe mode. 1B) Replaced it with WebRoot. Worked with them (earlier today) and they have no hooks in T-Bird.

2) I run a wired lan. And should you need to know, pfsense in a firewall Gateway server machine.

3) I turned off hardware acceleration and the Freeze now happens right on 5 minutes. (it is still off for now).

4) Oddity -- of W11 Home. Don't know if this has anything to do with anything. But because of being a mainframe developer and support person, thought I would mention it in case there is a problem with this, since I do not know the Intel instruction set or how dispatch of tasks is done with Winderz. But I know I have to reset FF to be the default browser every time I reboot. And FF reports that this is a W10 O/S.

5) understand diagnostics (troubleshooting step....). And I've tried everything I can think of, or found using FF looking for T-Bird freezing. No Joy.

Hope all of this helps.

I'm still not clear whether Windows safe mode worked or not. Uninstalling your 3rd-party anti-virus software will ultimately activate Windows Defender. Therefore Windows safe mode is the only reliable way to turn off anti-virus software.

Once I got into SAFE mode today, T-Bird spit out an error message about not being able to connect to my email domain.

I'm not sure I did make it into Window's Safe mode before installing Webroot. Webroot actually blocks the internet access when Windows goes into Safe mode (Windows behaved differently today under Webroot).

When I was running Total AV, I had tried to get into SAFE mode and it looked differently than what I just ran into. But if that was Safe Mode when I tried it last week, TBird still hit the hang. So I want to repeat the test with Webroot being disabled to be sure.

Therefore, I will be trying this again later today because I have to get a code for Webroot to allow allow Windows to have access to TCPIP under Safe Mode. Just so you know, PING 9.9.9.9 failed as did 8.8.8.8 with a "general" error if I remember correctly.

Make sure to use Windows safe mode with Networking. Networking here requires a wired connection, not WiFi.

Sorry, I am not a specialist. I am using anti virus SW, Firefox etc. and just want to use it. Untill the latest update everything was fine. What happen ith this new pdate, that TBird is basically not useable. I do not to get to outlook, juast want to work. Thanks for your help.
