On certain websites this "Geckomain" process destroys my CPU to 100% and maxes my network traffic with more upload traffic than download, using a lot of my data and bandwidth etc. This is a major concern because I have to pay for my data, it's not unlimited. If left open this process will consume more than 1.5gb of RAM while nothing functions. The only way to stop it is to leave the website. I have to use these websites for my job, so I can't just avoid them. I need a resolution ASAP. Thank you.

Geckomain is the main processor thread like used for the user interface and other important processes that do not have their own thread.

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.
