I have a disability and use a third-party accessibility software--how can I continue to use the new version without it being so slow?

I just upgraded to version 57.0.o4 Quantum and all the sudden Firefox is superduper slow, freezes, and hangs to the point of being completely unusable. I was reading in the forum that someone else was able to solve this problem by turning off accessibility services. I use a third-party accessibility software, so when I tried turning off accessibility services the software no longer works.

This is making me think that Firefox no longer supports users with disabilities. Is this true?

If this isn't the case, Does anyone know what I can do to get my browser back up to speed? I already did an uninstall and reinstall, as well as a complete reset of the settings.

I would be most grateful for anyone who can help with this. Having a disability, my browser is my lifeline to the rest of the world.

hi, which accessibility tools are you using? we know about performance problems with the new firefox multiprocess architecture and working on improving the situation there: https://www.marcozehe.de/2017/11/07/firefox-57-nvda-users-perspective/

Hi Philip, thanks for your response! I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking (a speech recognition tool) along with another program called Voice Computer that enhances DNS's ability to interface with different programs.

Hi Dragonand Fox - check these forums and you'll find that many of these have problems with a sluggard Firefox browser. Quantum ? I don't think so !

Some have moved to Chrome or other alternative browsers whilst others like myself have downgraded back to the speed version 56. Unfortunately doing so is a security risk and breaks extensions upgraded to 57. But speed is very important to my enjoyment of my PC. I didn't spend $2K building the damn thing to be waiting for a browser to do it's thing.

If not fixed soon I'll be abandoning ship too.

Hi Adam03, thanks for the solidarity. Are you using some type of accessibility software?

Also, do you think downgrading to 56 is better than ESR? I read the link that Philip shared, above, and it appears that ESR receive security patches.

Hi DragonandFox - I have poor vision problems so use the voice reading built into Windows only. You are right - if you are going to downgrade then I'd say you are much better off using the ESR still-supported version which I also found after I posted here. If you haven't got the link to the download page I found this:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/switch-to-firefox-extended-support-release-esr

I have faithfully used Firefox for many years but no-one from Firefox seems to be responding to users' complaints so if they don't fix the speed issues they will lose their users.

FF56 is no longer supported and won't get help if your asking. I would stay away from ESR unless you know how to configure it's settings. It a far different animal from regular FF. If you have addons you should first see if they are FF57 compatible otherwise you will loose those functions. Otherwise no one can make you go FF57 but you will have to sooner or later use FF57 regardless of what one may think. You can keep using FF56 but any security breaches you get isn't FF fault from then on.
