Currenlty have windows 10 with FF 54 64bit, and for the last few update my spell check has not worked.

i have rebilt my machine a number of times (not because of this) and the issue persists. even tyiping this message i i can see if im typing correctly

this is for many web sites.

i have alos followed instructions on FF bullitns to make sure that tick in the box is there "Check spelling as you type" under advanced options.

on the windows control panel i have settings typing and then spelling. this is turned on.

Any ideas would be handy. this is doing my nut and will am close to chaging browsers

Thanks

Windows control panel settings have nothing to do with the Firefox spellcheck feature.

The en-US version of Firefox comes with a spellcheck dictionary, with other locales the user needs to install a dictionary. (licensing issues for many of the other locales prohibit Mozilla from packaging those dictionaries with the Firefox installer)

Hey yeah I installed the GB dictionary still no go.. I'm on my friends laptop at the moment and their spell check works without the add-on! I think the only other thing I can try is add US spell check and US dictionary will give that a go

Hey I worked it out, under Dictionaries and Language Packs you need to install both a language pack and a dictionary, I only had the language pack - kinda what you told me to do but I thought I only needed the language pack!

Downloading and installing the dictionary should be sufficient. A language pack contains translated strings for the user interface and doesn't include a dictionary.

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages sub menu. At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.

  • open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.

The spelling checker is enabled if [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a checkmark.

You can enable or disable spell checking globally:

  • Options/Preferences -> General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can check the spellchecker.dictionary pref on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.
