keeps coming up 'page not responding' will not link to website
when using thunderbird the screen keeps having 'page not responding' freezes screen/ laptop and have to switch off and restart laptop. If i do not open thunderbird all works OK

If you were using Windows, I would suggest some Windows maintenance & fixing. I don't know Linux though.
So all I can suggest is backing up your Thunderbird Profile, uninstalling Thunderbird, rebooting the computer, then Download & install the latest version of Thunderbird from the website.
Thunderbird stores all personal data such as messages, address books, calendars and configuration settings in a hard drive folder called the Profile. This folder is separate from the installation of Thunderbird. When Thunderbird is uninstalled, it will leave behind your Thunderbird Profile folder, which will be found and used again when you install Thunderbird again. Despite this, it is a good idea to backup the Profile folder.
