Why do I get error R0107005 when trying to send a message but do not get it on the second try?
When I try to send a message I get the notice: "An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Authentication is required before sending [R0107005]. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again." If I wait a moment, don't change ANYTHING, then try again the message goes through. I am running Windows 10 on my PC and it just did a major update. Prior to the update this was not happening. Coincidence or cause? I have been using Thunderbird for years and never had this error before.

Doesn't Roadrunner require a password for the outgoing server? There used to be a method called POP-before-SMTP. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POP_before_SMTP
That might somewhat explain why it's working at the second attempt. But that's so old, I'd be surprised if it's still used by email providers today. So you'll need to check with Roadrunner about the correct server settings.
Also, your account doesn't use encryption, i.e. every time you access the server your password is transmitted in the clear. If Roadrunner don't offer encryption, look for a new email provider.
