Why is Firefox 4.0 is hanging after initial log-on or when accessing an embedded link within an email?

After downloading 4.0, I am unable to even navigate from page to page within the Mozilla site without each step hanging (message is "Firefox Not Responding"). When trying to access a link within an email, I am unable to get there due to Firefox hanging once again--same message. Eventually, the windows open, but it is VERY slow to "un-respond"
