I searched a movie and showtimes were for a city far distant from where I live

The search engine will probably tell you where it gets the location data from, somewhere in settings or fine print in its footer. It mostly likely defaults to "coarse" location info from your internet provider which can easily be ~100miles off — the approximate location will be shown and you'll have a chance to either update it, or switch to a "precise" location that will use your device GPS to report where exactly you are.

Thanks for your reply. I recently switched from Safari to Firefox on my iPhone. I never had this issue with Safari. With the Firefox search, results were more like thousands of miles away. I haven’t found a setting in Firefox to change to “precise”. But I’ll keep looking. If you don’t mind, perhaps you can tell me exactly where that parameter is set?

I did as you suggested and looked down at the bottom of the search results page and there was a way to change the location. Thank you very much.
