MacOS - can't open links from other apps: Firefox already open

When I try to open a link from a different app, e.g. from calibre to open the Updates link, firefox opens a new instance instead of opening a new tab in the current instance. This causes the browser to throw an error and never open the link.

is this fixable?

But any link acts the same, from any app (e.g. word editor, whatsapp, emails, etc)
